How to restore unblemished skin

The pimples or zits usually appear on the face, your neck, shoulders and upper body. This is where you have the greatest number of oil glands. Almost everyone is affected as the level of hormones changes in the body. Here are a few simple rules for keeping the problem to a minimum.

1. If your skin dries out, this makes acne worse so do not use an alcohol-based toner or astringent. Unmedicated soap and water is the best.

2. Retain moisture in your skin by using creams and lotions with the label “noncomedogenic”, i.e. they contain no oil.

3. Eat what you want. It makes no difference to your skin. It may not do much good for your waist to eat unlimited amounts of pizza or chocolate, but that is a different problem.

4. Drink plenty of water. Your body is more healthy if you are hydrated.

5. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. The vitamins A and E they contain are good for your skin.

6. Avoid heavy foundation powders and creams with an oil base. Keeping your pores free to breathe is good for your skin.

7. Before putting on any make-up, splash cold water on to your face. This closes the pores and prevents too much from entering the skin. Always wash your face before going to bed.

8. Do not use greasy hair products. Gels and sprays can easily get on to your face. If in doubt, have your hair cut or pull it back to prevent it from falling on to your skin.

9. Touching your face with your fingers can also transfer natural grease, oil and bacteria. Always use a pad or cotton balls to apply make-up or creams.

10. It is better not to sunbathe. Wear an oil-free sunscreen or a hat. This is essential if you use Accutane because the ultraviolet is more likely to burn you.

11. Do not wash or rub your face too much. This can damage the surface of the skin and dry it out.

12. Never “pop” your pimples. This delays healing by pushing some puss deeper into the skin and can lead to more scarring of the face.

13. If you use acne meds, always follow the instructions given. Excessive use of some products can damage your skin.

14. There is no point in being passive. If one acne product does not work, try another one.
